Prah, Constantine and Baryeh Reviews: Second Chance Marquess by Jessica Jefferson

After, dabbling in paranormal for our last review, we decided to go for a historical romance - and we selected Second Chance Marquess by Jessica Jefferson
Here's the short and sweet blurb:
When Wilhelmina Turner’s younger sister runs off with a young Lothario, she has no choice but to turn to the notorious rake who broke his promise and her heart, for assistance. George Bartlett, the Marquess of Chesterton, hasn’t forgotten the woman who hurt him so many years ago, but can’t deny her request, knowing that his brother’s reputation and fortune is at risk. A series of misfortunes leave the straight-laced widow and committed bachelor stranded, sharing both close quarters and old secrets. But when morning comes, will this unlikely pair find a second chance at love?

My Review
Second chance romances fascinate me, because there is often a lot of baggage and emotion to work with. There is also an element of sadness that goes with love once lost, which gets me almost every time.

The Heroine: Willie is a woman who has had her heart broken and learnt the bitter consequences of following her heart in an era where marrying right and keeping up appearances is supremely important. She is now dedicated to ensuring her sister doesn't fall into the same trap. As fate would have it,  this decision brings her back to the man who broke her heart.

As strong and selfless protagonists go,  Willie is a good one. She doesn't make apologies for who she is and doesn't expect anyone's charity or sympathy.

The Hero, George, is a classic rich,  entitled guy who expects to have his way and anything money can buy.  The author brings a little depth to him by allowing the reader to see why he became the man he is.

The journey to rescuing Willie's sister gives them the opportunity to confront their past and the feelings of hurt they both still harbour. This is a relatively simple story and the author doesn't pretend otherwise. I found the pace of the story to be good.  The romance between Willie and George is sweet and a few flashbacks reveal more about their love. There are one or two moments of predictability, and an aspect about the end is a cultural no-no where I come from, but they did not detract too much from the story.

Overall,  it is can enjoyable story with some moments of humour. The characters are well-rounded, sweet and likable. Recommended if you're looking for a sweet historical romance.
